The conference hall of the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere on Thursday 27th January, 2016 played host to government officials, football administrators and school representatives as Guaranty Trust Bank officially announced the commencement of the 7th edition of its flagship youth soccer competition, the GTBank-Lagos State Principals Cup.
The competition which has become an integral part of the academic calendar of schools, provides a veritable platform for students to explore their potentials and acquire life changing skills. The ceremony formally sets the tone for the series of activities that the competition will feature this year.
On ground to perform the unveiling was the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Education as well as other senior officials from the Lagos State Football Association, Lagos State Ministries of Education, Sports and Youth development, as well as representatives of secondary schools that emerged winners in last year’s tournament.
This year, the tournament is expected to feature about 360 teams in the male and female categories, a figure slightly higher than the 355 teams that took part in the competition last season. Also, participants in this year’s tournament, will have the opportunity of utilizing the newly completed sports facility located in Surulere. The completion of this ultra-modern sporting facility is an attestation of the Bank’s promise to upgrade sports infrastructure in Nigeria.
Guaranty Trust Bank, a youth oriented brand maintains the lead in providing support for education and sports to enable young boys and girls explore their talents and reach for their dreams. Since the commencement of the competition in 2009, the GTBank-Lagos State Principals Cup competition has featured several Secondary Schools, and over 15,000 players in the boys and girls categories.
GTBank remains one of the few Nigerian financial institutions that have maintained a defined Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy, most especially in sports education. The GTBank Principals Cup as well as the Masters Cup tournament in Lagos and Ogun state are some of the projects the bank has taken up in this regards.
